ALLIED Feather + Down: Case Study

Overview:
ALLIED Feather + Down, a global leader in responsibly sourced and sustainably processed down, wanted to put real numbers behind its belief that its processing delivers a lower-impact material. Green Threads implemented an ongoing carbon footprint audit of ALLIED's facility in Hangzhou, China and their upstream supply chains.
The Challenge:
As Digital Product Passport requirements take shape, apparel and outdoor brands will need material-level carbon data. Industry-average figures for down are extremely limited and represent broad estimates. ALLIED needed a specific, verified benchmark for its own processing.
Our Process:
Green Threads audited ALLIED's down processing using actual annual data for energy, water, wastewater and detergent consumption. The assessment covered slaughterhouse impact, transportation, and processing at the Hangzhou facility. Calculations followed ISO 14067:2018, PAS 2050:2011 and PCR 2024:03 (Apparel, Except Fur and Leather Apparel).
The Results & Impact:
• 0.48 kg CO₂e per kg of down (cradle-to-gate processing)
• 85% lower than the estimated industry average for conventional down
• 57.9% lower than published figures for recycled down
• 95% lower than the estimated footprint of polyester alternative insulations
The results reflect years of work by ALLIED, including on-site water reclamation that allows 95% of water to be reused. ALLIED partner brands now have verified data to support material selection and regulatory compliance.
